The frost which visited the district some tune ago, and the long drought which followed, have'had an injuri-* ous effect on the root crops in several quarters. Hence the fear of a partially bad his seat in the Magistmtes Court at Queenstown last Thursday, after three months’ absence, Mr Beetham was congratulated by the local members of tne bar, who expressed great pleasure at seeing his Worship once more occupying the Bench and a hope that he might long remmn m the district to administer justice a “Aiwr Ue .same satisfaction to all sides that he had hitherto given. The trout fry turned out in the Waiareka stream, on the Windsor Park property, have evidently thriven well, at any rate as regards some of them, as a fish measuring fourteen inches in length, and weighing be* tween three and four pounds, was captured a day or two ago in that stream. The growth is something remarkable, as the fry turned out by Mr Menlove, two years ago, were then only about an inch long. Considerable excitement was caused in town on Monday at the close of the proceedmgs at the Resident Magistrate’s Court at Riverton on it becoming known that .five °f the defendants in the cases connected with the late fracas at the highland bridge. ™ been coounitted to Itivercagill gaol tor refusing to sign the recognisances to appear at the adjourned hearing on the 28th ofFebniary. Four of the defendants—Campbell, Garvin, Stanley, and Moses—had signified their refusal immediately on the Court re% Burning after lunch, but were told to wait until the civil business had.been disposed of before they would be heard. On their being again asked to find sureties and the documents, they once more refused to do so, and were committed. Thomas Cooper, who appeared inclined to sign, but did not care about being the only working member of the Government party who “ratted it," joined the band of “ Government martyrs,’’ and also intimated his intention not to sign. The commitment forms were speedily filled up, and the "prisoners” despatched a few minutes afterwards by the afternoon coach. A large crowd turned out to see than off, and they were lustily cheered as theooaoh took its departure. The fnen could not work in Riverton, and their board and lodging cost them about 80s per week, so they thought it better to “ work it out at Fraser’s Hotel” than hang about the town for another fortnight, or perhaps longer, doing nothing. *
