THE MAILS.
To the Editor. Si*,—Bishop Nevil very rightly celled attent oa about a ye ar ago to tbe fact that met* chants were accustomed to send their clerks oa a Sunday, if tbe English Hail arrived, to get the letteis. _ But it is a fact that that custom still continues, and if a clerk should ever demur or make an excuse he is hot at all viewed in a favourable light. It is a shame and worthy'nf being punished the same as if a man worked bn a Sunday, but, unfortunate'y, there is ro law whereby a merchant or pers on of high sooial stmuing ban be cal'cd upon for this useless breaking of the “day <*f rtst” This is a stem fact well know a‘ in Dunedin,'for the writer himself has bad, on the a-rival not only of the Eng.ish, but of the Melbourne Mail, to get the letters, and has had to do so by sacnficing a day’s enjoyment with friends. ladd it was a use* has breaking of the “day of rut,” and can assure you of when th.. outward mail would leave, perhaps' thr*-e davs or a week after*' wards, they .stll desire to got their letters on the Sunday notwithstanding If the Govern* ment did right they should not sort letters on a Sunday, but have them early, in the boxes on M nda morning thus avoiding all aeoes* sty or | retenoe >or anym>chant to get his clerk to ’Un to the post on every triviol oo* casion. By inserting the above you will nb Ige, One WBo E <offs.: Dunedin, February 21.
