At the Police Court this morning, before Messrs Pyke and Mercer, J.P.’s., Charlotte O’Brien was fined 5s for drunkenness, and 20s for making use of obscene language, in Walker street. John Wilks, for using abusive language towards Robert Moore, was fined 5s and costs ; and a charge against Mary Windless, of throwing stones at George Simpson, was dismissed.
The remarks recently made by Judge Ward as to the unsuitableness of a certain kind of sheep for human food, and the evil effects caused by indulging therein, are beginning to bear fruit. The other evening a lover of mutton went to a butcher’s shop in Invercargill and asked for so many pounds of Judge Ward’s chops—not Leicester. On being told that they were not in stock just then, he showed the sincerity of his opinion by purchasing steaks instead.
The Marionettes appear to be increasing in popularity, and there was again a full bouse at their entertainment at the Queen’s Theatre last night. The audience (which included many of the Port Chalmers folk, who had taken advantage of the late train) appeared delighted with the performance, as was evidenced by their hearty laughter at the funny things said and done by the Christy’s comer men, and the performing mules, and by the genuine applause accorded to the beautiful scenery. There will be an afternoon performance to-morrow, and all children should make a point of attending. The trial of coach v. railway is going on at Nelson, and Jehn advertises the following arguments on his side of the question. He says the public should support the coach, because:—(l.) It has done good service for eleven years. (2) It is cheaper. (3) After this week the hours will suit you better than the railway. (4) I pick up and land passengers at their own gates. (6) I take your parcels and deliver them at their address in town. (6) I don’t pretend to take you to Foxbill and drop you two miles short of it. (7) I know you, and you know me, and that 1 may be depended upon to execute your commissions faithfully.
Weleam from the Napier ‘Daily Telegraph’ that the leading Maori cmefa of Hawke’s Bay, on the advice of Mr John Sheehan, have taken prompt action in the matter of the foul murder recently committed by the miscreant Winiata at Epsom. The chiefs of Heretannga have written to the Maori King, strongly urging him to refuse protection to the murderer in the eyent of that man seeking refuge in his country. Winiata is a Ngatemahuta, the' King’s tribe, and has several relations at Te Kuiti; the Hawke’s Bay chiefs ask Tawhiao to ignore the tribal relationship, and to give the murderer up to justice. It appears Winiata was for seyeral years residing at Pakowhai, and waa outlawed {of pilfering and other miscondnoit.
A very senseless trick was played at Milton on Tuesday night. While. the local Fire Brigade were celebrating their anniversary some people, a gorse hedge bn fire, which led to an alarm being rubg, and consequently to a temporary cessation of .;the, festivities; K, ' i’' The following was the Saperintenddnt’s • telegram he received froxmthe miners, inquiring the state d the ijiabor market in Otago “ Dunedin, February iq,~Mr Charles Ebwley. —Provincial Government works are at present all under contract, so that I could not undertake to find employment for the miners referred to. If, however, they are ablebodied, genuine, baed-working sober men, willing to turn their hands to anything, : there is- plenty-of - employment- -in the-yPro-vince at fair wages. They should drop in imperceptibly—say fifty a week. I would not recommend married couples to come at present.— J. Superintendent ol Otago.”
Another shipload of'immigrants is on the way to Invercargill, m. few weeks -ago (says the ‘Southland News’) the Ipc*! i Immigration Officer; in his quarterly report to head-quarters, pointed out that the labor market in the Southland district was at present fully supplied* and the advisability of stopping free immigration to the Bluff, at least for some time; also that it should be confined to persons nominated by friends here. A reply has been ’ received from the Undersecretary for Immigration to the effect that the report referred to had been received “too late to countermand a ship appointed to sail on the 16th January. This ship, however, completes the order for emigration to the Bluff to the 30th April, so that pending further instructions no other shipment iWill be made.” •
A special meeting of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society will be held in the Lodge room, on Monday next, at 7.30. The residents of the Maori Hill district are requested to meet in the Schoolroom this evening, to discuss matters re municipality.
