VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
rifle match. The deciding match between No. 1 Company and North Dunedin Rifles was fired off this morning at the Anderson’s Bay Range ; they each having won a match, the No. 1 Company Guards the first by six points, and the N. D. Rifles the second by twenty-two points, a great deal of interest was manifested in the final one, by which, as is shown below, the North Dunedin Company proved themselves the crack shooting team of this Province, in answer to their challenge, issued some months since. On this occasion they fired without one of their best men (P. Frederick, who is out of the Province) who had been their highest scorer oh the two previous occasions. Their opponents also fired a man short, but according to conditions the average had to be taken for him. Vol. Tresseder is the highest scorer on either side, with 48, well put together. The conditions of the match were—2oo yards, standing, Wimbledon target ; 500 and 600 yards, any position ; five shots at each range ; no sighting shots. The morning was dull, with very little wind; the targets were bad—appearing perfectly black at the long ranges. Noam Dunedin.
Points in favor of North Dunedin Rifles ... 12 In answer to the petition of Lieut. Skinner and the other Auckland. Volunteers who failed to qualify, the Government refuses to allow the firing to take place again, and considers that the argument about the weapon with which the Auckland Volunteers are supplied being inferior to those supplied at other parts of the Colony, is amply refuted by the high scores made in the preliminary contest at Auckland. It is now the intention of the petitioners to ask permission to go to Wanganui as extra representatives, at their own expense. the colonial prize firing, .
