His Honor: It is hardly the thing.for the ; Athenaeum t*> charge rent: the objects of such iastitutions are partly educational, —lt was agreed ID transmit the matter back to the dchool Committee to confer with the Athemeum Committee.
Memorial for Schook:—fferiot Hundred, thirty<two childi en would attend, distance from nine to seventeen miles to nearest school. His Honor j It was only yesterday there was nothing but the Dunrobin Hotel there. That is indicative, inn't it. Application granted Hctljehope, twenty-five chUdren would attend; Ketused.
Two-thirds of repairs were allowed to:— Akatoie, 1.8 10s; Tnapeka*Mouth, L 3 9s9d; Bluff, L 46 6s 8d; Maungatua, LI 13e 4d; Kaitanga'a, L4olßs 6d; Fortrose, L 69 ts 8d: Cardrona, L 4 18s; Port Chalmers, Ll2s3d; Inveroargill, L3O. v ■ It was agreed to accept proposed school site at Upper Waireka; to purchase Bite at Tuakitotomaj anacee)for achool for Lovell'sFlat and Tuakitoto, frnm Mr Forsyth, for L3O; and to grant a school to Wild Bush. One hah: time school to be allowed to Maerewhemu, provided there U no additional expense to the Board. The allowances to Macetown and Albertown Sofcools wera stopped owing to the great falling off in the attendance.
Mr Dlack wrote onViiag to teach phonography in schools. The Secret art intimated tbat Mr . Norrie'. was making arrangements 'o have it taught. in \tbe Boys' Bigh School as an extra subjeot. He (Mr Hislop) wouM suggest that it might be made one of the branches in the Normal School —His Honor: Ithmkitissmoitimportantthing and ought to be taught.— Mr Gillies : It is a moat valuable accomplishment.—lt was agreed to refer the letter to the rector of the Normal School as to the expediency of introducing short-hand teaching into the'school. ; Mr Buechler was appointed German master to the Boya' .High School at LSO. I- wa* agreed to grant i. Grermau teacher to the Girls' School at L3O.
It was decided that the services of Mr Gow as writing mast- r should be confined to the High School soHv, Mr Fitxserald undertaking to teach at the Normal School; and that an assistant-jauitor be allowel to the Bigh Schools at 11b per week; " '
