CHESS MATCH—AUCKLAND v. DUNEDIN.

Tori novel and interesting match by telegraph between the two principal Cities of the North and Middle Island of New Zealand was c unmenced last evening. „ We have already adverted to the arrangements and combtions for conduct'ng the match, and we have now to sta'e that these were of the most satisfactory character. The players were pi ted against each ot’ier acco ding to their respective merits, a course which had the effect of making all the games better contested than if the play e s had drawn for their opponents, which is the custom in these matches in rhe sister Colonies. There were nne players on each side, arranged as f/VUnw-A'- . AucKianu; —r>uueo.iu. • Board A ... ... ... Morton v, D. E. Hay »» Stewart Janion »* £5 ..." Lusk Mount »» . D Nixon v Ash » E ... Williams Cross »• jr... Heather Griusteod » ® •" ••• ... Brodio Wilson * »> H ... ... Eico Quick i» « ... ... Jakina Christie One game only bad to be played, the winners of the majority to claim yic ory. The Dunedin players all presented themselves in good time at the seat of war, viz., the Provincial Council L : brary Room, and the Auckland players were located in thtir Telegraph Office, i'he arrangements of the Telegraph Department in this island were most admirable. A battery for the operator was placed in the Library, and the Auckland wire was thus connected with the very seat of conflict. A large numter of visitors attended, amongst whom were several ladies. It was genera ly understood that the mitoh would be completed at one sit-t-ug, but when ad 1 war going on smoothly a telegram from Auckland (at 1.30 a.m.) announced their intention of adjourning the match till Wednesday evening. The Dunedin players seemed to prefer finishing at one sitting, but there was no alternative, and the games were c nsequenfly postponed. We prefer Dunedin players’ posi inns in nearly all the games, more especially at board < C, L». and E. Communications were intet changed this mominr, and the ma‘ch is 1 1 be resumed at 8 o’clock sharp this evening.
