In the way of showing how colonists travel (says a contemporary), it may be mentioned that the daughter of Dr Turner, now resident in Auckland, and aged about eight years, has already been seven times round the world.
In consequence of the indisposition of Miss Stephenson “Toodles” was substituted for “Caste” at the Queen’s Theatre last evening, and Mr Bates’s representation of the principal character wa& well received. ‘ ‘ Hamlet ” will be played to-night. The whole of the immigrants by the ship Corona were removed yesterday to the Quarantine Island in lighters towed by the p.a. Portobello. One of the adults—Mrs Hallimau—who was ill of puerperal fever, died the previous evening, and was buried on- the island yesterday. She leaves five children.
A letter in a Nelson paper says that the single females ex Caroline must be very badly managed, or there is some gross error in the regulations' of the dep6t, for some of the young women are not only seen drinking at the public houses, but in company with very questionable characters are found roaming the streets at a late hour.
The ‘ Southland Times ’ makes the following rather improbable statement:— * ‘lt is rumored that Sir J. L. 0. Richardson, the Speaker of the /Upper House, will not offer himself again for that office, preferring to take a more active part in the debates. In that event, probably Colonel Richmond, C.8., the former Chairman of Committees in that branch of the Legislature, would be elected.”
The inquest on the body of Henry North, fall of earth while working in a cu?fthg V on the Purakanui section of the Dunedin and Moeraki railway, was held yesterday afternoon in the Court-house at Port Chalmers. The jury, after hearing the evidence of Mrs North, William Sheppard, and John Orlaskey, which proved that every precaution had been taken, returned a verdict of “accidental death.”
The lovers of opera will be glad to learn that the Simonsen season of twenty-four nights will be commenced at the Queen’s Theatre on March 11. Mr Talfourd Young informs us that the repertoire of sixteen operas will include “La Fille de Madame Angot,” “La Perichole,” “The Island of Bachelors,” &c.; that the costumes are of a very extravagant kind, having cost close upon L 5,000; and that there will be a strong ballet, introducing Misses Emily Kaye am! Louise Aitcheson as premiere danseuses. A notorious criminal died lately in the Hospital at Hokitika, where he had been removed for better medical treatment. At the inquest which was held the jury in a rider strongly remonstrated against the practice there of having criminals admitted into the same ward with other patients, and recommended that in future, should a similar case arise, it would be advisable for the authorities in the gaol to take such steps aff would obviate the necessity of removing a notorious criminal to the wards of a charitable institution.
There was only a short sitting of the City Police Court to-day, Jane Margaret de la Mare, charged with drunkenness, was dismissed with a caution; John Reekie was fined 40s, or fourteen days’ imprisonment; Charles Albert Smith, charged on remand with stealing a quantity of goods of the value of 20s, the property of Richard Driver, of Brockonui, was sent to gaol for fourteen days. Prisoner told a long story to the Bench, in which ho tried to shift the blame on to his mate, solemnly declaring that he (the prisoner) was the wrong party. The Bench, however, thought differently, and considered the evidence quite conclusive. Messrs Pyke, H.M., and'M‘Lean, J.P., presided.
There was a very good attendance at the special meeting of the Yorkshire Club, held at the Empire Hotel last evening. After the business had been gone through for which the meeting had been convened, it was decided that a picnic to WaihoJa Lake on the 17th March, under the auspices of the Club, should be arranged, and a subcommittee was appointed to carry out the necessary arrangements. It is intended to make the picnic as attractive as possible, and it was suggested by the members present that it should not be limited to the members of the Club and their respective families, but that the general public should have the opportunity of participating in the day’s amusements. Prom the manner in which the subscriptions are coming in, the Club promises to be a success.
Those who attended the Temperance Hall last night enjoyed a rich treat; and so well did Mr Bright help his audience to pass away a couple of hours in the company of those who have figured prominently in the history of Victoria, or still occupy distinguished positions in that Colony, that we could have wished, for his own sake, that he had introduced himself to the Dunedin public under the wing of “Victorian Celebrities.” The early history of Victoria* the rise and progress of its newspaper press (for which the lecturer himself has labored long and well), and the manners and customs of the people, were pleasantly sketched ; and much was heard, for the first time, of the witty Aspiuall. A hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer was moved by Mr J. G. 8. Grant. Victorian experiences are to be repeated to-morrow, and we cordially ree munend those who have not yet heard them to go to the Temperance Hall. • I
