A LOVING WIFE.

A man named Duffy, a fisherman residing at Geelong, was ignominiously treated by a party of women (his faithful wife being the ringleader in the affair) on returning from the New Year’s Day sports. His wife, with a number of her intimate acquaintances ■ —neighbors of hers—had determined upon paying him out; accordingly two of them laid hold of his shoulders, two of his feet, and he was anything but gently carried out into the yard, where a zinc-lined tank stood yawning for him. Into this the Amazoniahs thrust him, despite his heart-rending and soul-stirring entreaties not to wet his best coat, with which he had adorned himself on the first day of the new year. His head and hat, together with his feet and hoots, were all crammed in, the women finding the tank too small to accommodate him comfortably. When he was completely submerged, Duffy wished to have, to say the least of it, one more look at things sublunary, and consequently raised his head above the water to take a parting glance. No sooner did the unfortunate man’s head appear above water than his wife, who had been thus far successful in her schemes, determined to carry them to the bitter end, aimed a welldirected blow at Duffy, infflicting a fearful gash, the water soon assuming a darker hue, caused by the blood flowing from the wound. He was taken from hia home at which hia wife intended him to remain for ever, to the Hospital, where great difficulty was found in stopping the flow of blood, he being very weak from the quantity he had lost.
