. Gbahamstown, January 18. A meeting was held on Saturday night to take into consideration the present depressed state of the Thames Goldfields, wh/ire a great many are out of employment. The meeting was very largely attended. Resolutions were passed urging ou the Government to institute publ c works to relieve the depression. The speeches and resolutions were of a temperate character. A Progress Committee was ap pointed.

Wellington, January 17. The Government have chartered the steamer Egmont to assist the Luna with the cable. The Luna left port at 1.30 this morning, and the Egmont at about nine. A heavy swell is reported in the Straits, but little or no wind. They hope to begin work this afternoon.
