FIRE.

A fire was discovered in Messrs Brown and flour mills, as the j motion of Bond and Liverpool streets, at twenty minuses past one this morning. It was fit at noticed by r tidward lieselton, re iding at the London Hotel, Jetty, street, who observed a quantity of smoke issuing from the premises. The tiro had then bun a slight hold of the building, and it is believed that had a dozen buckets of water been available it could have been extinguished. As it was, Mr Heseltoo with Sergeant O'Neill and others, managed lo keep the flames subdued till after the aUrm had been given, a constable having in the meantime been dispatched to the Bell Tower. The jblre Brigade were not long in putting in an appearance, but an un accountable delay t.f fully a quarter of au hour occurred before the water was got in full play. The fUmes in consequence spread lo the top story, and the Harbor Chambers and the Evening Stab Office wore threatened. Fortunately, howeyer, the fire was confined to the flour mil.'. Au inspection held immediately the fire was got under showed fhat it broke out in trie dowing machinery, caused by some open bearings getting overheated. Mr Biown states that he has had to

stop the machinery on several occasions befaie in consequence of this The • remiss were looked up shortly after midnight, and the machinery was then stopped. The mill is usually kept going all night, tut lately night work has had to be partly suspended in consequence of short supplies of wheat. The building, which is not much damaged, is owned by Messrs Neill and Co., of Bond street. The insurances on plant and stock are : National Office, LSOO on the plant and L 250 ou the sto k; Transatlantic, L 250 on stock; South British, L 250 ou the plant an I L 250 on the stock. Mr Brown estimates his loss at L 650.
