IMMIGRATION.

The following table shows the number of immigrants introduced into Otago from January 1 to December 31, 1875 :

were landed at the Bluff;— Souls Equal to Ship. landed. Adults. Christian ITAuslaad ... 331 281 Peter Denny ... ... 264 2031 Adamant 267 225} Waitva ... ... 216 178 Total 1,078 888 . In 1874 there arrived twenty-five immigrant vessels with 8,920 souls, equal to 7,355 statute adults. The longfest passage made by any of the ships daring the present year was that of the City of Dunedin; the quickest that of the Oamaru. Amongst the quarantined vessels were the Gareloch and the Margaret Galbraith. The immigrants, as a whole, have proved a very desirable class; and we have had no such complaints to make as we had last year, when the “Asiatics”and “ Carolinas ” —Mrs Howard’s “pet” selections were landed in our midst. Notwithstanding the large numbers which have arrived, all were pretty quickly absorbed, owing to the complete arrangements made by Mr Allan and staff. The points of embarkation of the various vessels which arrived at Port Chalmers w ere :—From Loudon—Wild Deer, Gareloch, Oamaru, William Davie, Earl of Zetland, Wexmington, J. N. Fleming, Waimea, Zealandia, and Waimate. From Glasgow— Margaret Galbraith, City of Dunedin, Timaru, Aldergrove, Invercargill, Auckland, and Nelson. From Plymouuh—Wellington.
