ELECTORAL NOTES.

At the Riverton nomination yesterday, the following candidates were proposed:—Messrs M'Gillivray, Ricard Matthews, solicitor, of Invercargill, James Wilson, M.P.C., James Mackintosh, M.P.C., and Dr Hodgkinson. Mr Matthews withdrew immediately he was proposed, and Mr Wilson last night retired in favor of Mr Hodgkinson, so that th ere are now only three in the field - Dr Hodgkinson (ultra-Provincialist), Mr M'Gillivray (Abolitionist), and Mr Mackintosh (doubtful). The latter will secure a number of Catholic votes, as he is in favor of denominatonal education. i?« the Eangitieki 'election, it is said that Mr Bull is disqualified on account of being a Government contractor, and that Mr Ballance, the retiring member, has the better chance. Mr Bull, however, will go to the poll. At the Wanganui nomination the show of hands wasßryce, 63 ; Vogel, 50; Watt, 25; Pharazyn, 14; Field, 4. It is thought by a great many that the shows of hands indicate how the election will go, and that Mr Bryce or Sir Julius Vogel will head the poll. HEATHCOTE. At the polling yesterday for this election the numbers were ; J. T, Fisher 298 Sir Cracroft Wilson 170 Mr Fisher' is ’an abolitionist. Sir Cracroft Wilson, the old member, was very unpopular on the education question. WAIRARAPA ELECTION. The returns for Masterton, Feathcrston Greytowu, and the Scandinavian Settlement give the following results : Bunny 280 Andrew 155 Pharazyn 115 Carter 94 SOUTHERN MAORI DISTRICT. At Kaiapoi yesterday Hori Kori Taiaroa was re-elected for the Southern Maori District without opposition. THE CLUTHA NOMINATION. The following were the nominations today :—Mi' J, W. Thomson, proposed by Mr E, Cramond (Mayor), seconded by Mr John Shaw (of Finnigand). Mr W. A. Mosely, proposed by Mr R, M'Kenzie, seconded by Mr G. H. Gilroy (Inch Cluth). Sir J. Vogel, proposed by Mr John McNeil, and seconded bv Mr John Mac Donald. The show of hands was Thomson, 8 ; Mosely, 10 ; Vogel, 12. Mr Mosely demanded a poll, which will be taken on the 20th.
