Friday, December 31. (Before H. S. Fish, Esq , J.P., and J. S. Hickson, J.P.)

Drunkenness. Henry George was fined 40 s, in default three days’ imprisonment ; John McDonald, 40s, or fourteen days’; Ram-.-ay Leslie, os, or twenty-four hours’. Christina Simpson was discharged with a caution. Disorderly Conduct. —Richard Boulton, charged with disorderly conduct at the Kail way Station, was fined 5a and costs.

Alleged False Pretences —Thos, M'Cluggago was charged with obtaining the sum of 4 , by means of f-dse pretences, from James Barr, pound-keeper.—Defendant had driven two horses out of an enclosed paddock belonging to Messrs Wrighc, Stevenson to the pound, and as poundage fet s received 4s. The money he acknowledged as having received on behalf of the Caversham Koad Board. The Board’s officers sta ed that defendant had do authority to receive any moneys for the Board, and that he had not accounted to them fo. such Mr Hargreaves, the inspector, however admitted that he had employed defendant to assist him impounding cattle, promising to remunerate him at the rate of one shilling per head.—The Bench were of opinion that the charge could not bo sustained. It was quite evident that there had been no false pretence. It was laid down very clearly by Mr Justice Johnston that to establish a false pretence it. must ba shown that there was some inducement whereby the money or goo s were ratted with. Defendant was charged with the wrong offence, and tho case would be dismissed. Inspector Mallard explained that he had looked through the Ordinance but could see no other mode of summoning him.
