THE CALEDONIAN GAMES.
The sports at the Caledonian Grounds to-mor-row and Monday | >romise, witl > fair weather, to be more suci essfnl than any previous year’s, and wo iully expect to see 10,000 people witnessing them. r l ho Society gives upwards of L 450 in prizes, LlB2 of which is devoted to pedes trianism, and 1.100 to wrestling—the two most exciting andattnerive items in the programme. The entries lor the different events include not only lh« best local talent, but also many men from other Provinces and not a few of some repute, who have lately arrived from the old country. lire wrestlin’ competitors mrmber about a dozen, and include the familiar names of Geo. Robertson {:lie Maori), Fothergill, the three Tycous, J t tgg (who made his dihut here last year ), and two rrew arrivals -HaiperJ and G. arlyle. In addition to tiro numerous matches 'here will be that for the < hanrpion Belt, valued at I 30, ant open to all, so that tins department of lire sports, which has flagged a little of late ycats will this time prove perhaps the must interesting of all. For the flat and hurdle races -distances varying from 220 yards to one mile-there are between thirty and forty entrus, comprising most of < rrr local men, butnot including, v o regr-1 to say, that, or Westland. However, there are W, T. Hu ke, S. Brooks. F. Nain, Murdoch, W. Henderson, Nightingale, Aaron?, l]..nr,eit, and a hosa rf oilier:;, better or worse ; and in addition we find tire name? of visitors from other Provinces, including T. P. Gomlr, who won tlm 100 ya (Is and Indf-ini o races, and ran second for the quarter-mile at Christchurch a fortnight ago.
The walking races will be watched with interest, feu - in them will appear M, M'Gregor, W,. Stuart, J. Campbell, Neil Douglas, M. Car ', nndhithcre. Much disappointment will bo felt at Jacobson’s not having entered, but Chiistchureh will be well represented by C, Bowlcy, who beat Jacobsen at their late sports in the two-mile race.
Tim vexed question of J. Murray’s being allowed to enter, aud as a natural cousrquenco take all the best prizjs for dancing, has been settled this year by Lis br ing disqualified from competing, aud the wisdom of thin step has been proved by ;h<* entno Icing fir more numerous Ilian b've'obve, besides which the com i• to ion n will be more int- redd g. Among tin entries are the names of M‘Co’l, a| K< nzie, MTntyie. A. A, r j >iern, Aiumiy. jun., and J. Ogg, and t vo of (hone we understand have gained uuuierou-Jpi izca iu Edinburgh, whence they have but recently arrived,
The vaulting:, leaping, throwing tin hamm r, quoiting, and other sport- have been well supported, and should piove interesting. In conclusion, we may tay that the ground will not be so heavy as might be imagined after yesterday’s rain, for it was very dry previously. The .Society have made considerable improvement in tho arrangements of the dressing room for competitors, which is situated in a much more handy position for them.
