Wellington, December 20. This afternoon a quantity of Cook Straits cable, which has been coiled away under the telegraph office, was taken on board the Luna. It will all be taken on board to-morrowj and a start will be made on Thursday.
Auckland, December 20, The criminal calendar contains five charges of wilful murder against four persons.

Wellington, December 28. The steamer Hawea did not return from her excursion trip to Nelson this morning, causing much gnashing of teeth in the office,*, as many of the officials had gone in her for the trip. Clyde, December 29. A fire broke out in Parkea’ Hartley Arms Stables, Clyde, which were comp’etely de stroyed. Three horses, the property of Mr Parkes, were burned. He estimates his loss at 1-200, and was uninsured. The cause of the fire is supposed to have been accidental. An inquest will be held.
