ELECTORAL NOTES.
Sir George Grey has consented to stand for the Thames, and Mr Robert Graham wid stand along with him. Tbelnomioation was to-day, and the poll takes place on January G. Mr O’Eorke was to-day elected for Onehunga, without opi osition. Some strong personalities were used at the Wellington Couu<ry nomination. The following dialogue between Mr Wallace, one ot the candidates. and an elector who is locally known as “ Old Smith ” is reported : Mr Smith (addressing the assemblage, and pointmg to Mr Wallace); I have known this man a number of years, and never yet heard a respectable thing about him.—(Loud laughter.) Mr Wallace: I challenge you to prove anything against me. Mr Smith was understood to say something about Mr Wallace having charged commission a second time on a sale which took place some ten months' ago. Mr Wallace denied it, and said Mr Smith had a private grudge. Mr niith ; You are a liar.—(laughter.) The Returning Officer pointed out that this was not quite proper. Mr Wallace (excitedly): He had made a statement against me, and I challenge him to prove it. Mr Smith (advancing t >wards Mr Wallace): I can. You pro a liar! Mr Wallace.- And were Ito call you a blackguard, I should be telling the truth. Mr Smith: My charecter stands higher than yours. Mr Wallace: You can go and do what you like with your character. You can go and exercise your vote as you like. I don’t respect your vote or you either. At the official declaration of the poll at Clyde to-day the numbers were stated to be Pyke, 307; Baird, 159. LYTTELTON ELECTION. The polling took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr H. W. MurrayAyusley, an Abolitionist and Government supporter, who in 1871 unsuccessfully contested he with M*" H. R. Webb. Xhe numbers polled were M urray-Aynsley 139 Webb 107 TAIERI ELECTION. The nomination took place to-day, Mr Andrew Todd proposed and Mr James Allan, M.P.C., seconded Mr Donald Reid, who was declared elected, there being no other candidate. Mr Donald Reid spoke at some length. He said he would not raise any factious opp sition to the majority in the new Assembly. A vote of thanks 'o the Returning ' ’fficer (Mr Fulton) and ihree cheers for Mr Jleid brought the proceedings to a close. There were thirty electors present.
