OUR ARROWTOWN LETTER.
Macetown, December 13, A Chinese funeral was celebrated on Sunday last at Macetown in the temporary cemetery, where the few rest who have passed away in this wild and lonely mountain region are interred side by side, irrespective of race or cre'-d. The Chinese lighted candles round the foot of the coffin, and after the grave wa? filled in placed refreshments on the grave, at the same tiiim giving to everyone who attended, both Chinese and others, a shilling each, and closed the ceremonies by a liberal discharge of crackers. The deceased, a Chinaman of (if yseven years of age, hid been under medical care, and succumbed to inflammation of the tonsils. He left a sum of LBO, which will be forwarded to China, where he has left a wife and two children. A few days back at the Cardrona, the Anotv bailiff seized a hut and furniture under distraint warrant, and left a young now chum in possession, whom. : J»e gave L2 on accoun* for his services? Shortly afterwards the bailiff was suspended by receiving a note from his sub., complaining that he had ho idea of the discreditable and mean nature of the service required, and that he had consequently abandoned his trust and lelt the property, at the same time demanding a further sum as re munerat on. '1 be letter concluded with a hope that the bailiff would not again seek to place the writer in such a false position as that which he had indignantly abandoned. On hurrying over, the unfortunate bail ff found all the movable property removed, while his sub. roundly abused him for having led him into what he termed “ a disreputable piece .of business,’ N.B—The young man is new open |for engagement, but will require good references from his next empioj er.
