PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
At the Council’s fortnightly meeting last night there were present—the Mayor. Cts Asher, M‘Kenlay, M‘Gregor, Reid, Menolaus, and Miller.
Correspondence was received from Mr Grant, Inspector of Works, that he had found it necessary to call the attention of the contractor for stone-breaking to the coarseness of the metal, when the contractor insulted him. He (the Inspector) asked the protection of the Council while performing his duties. From Mr Hugh M'Fadjan, clerk to the North-East Road Hoard, that after careful consideration of the present indebtedness of that Board, they were obliged to decline any roadmaking for the present. In reference to the Inspector's'letter it was resolved, on Cr, Miller’s motion, to demand an apology from the contractor. The application of Messrs Murray and Co., and Mr James jM‘E-van to leasing chain frontage of Town Belt, at the rate of L 4 per annum, were referred to the Works Committee. Mr John iSb Ison’s application ror permissi m to make ■>. cros -ing in Currie street, was granted; and Mr Bauchop’s, to mike a crossing in Grey street, referred to the Works Committee.
| The following reports were received and adopted From fclhe Cemetery Committee—recommending that, as the first-class sections in the cemetery at present laid off, have nearly all been sold—that the portion on the plan left for ornamental purpoies, be laid off, which would give eighteen additional tirst-olass sections, which they trussed would be sufficient um.il another suitable place could be secured for a now cemetery. They also recommended ! that, where ivquaed, fresh trees and shrubs should be planted. From the Finance Committee lit. As to the financial position of the Council, that they had gone over the details, and found the finances to b i in a very satisf-ctory slate, there being sufficient assets to moot all existing liabilities ; while there was to their credit at the Bank, on the Gth inst., tho sum of L 321 19s 9J, besides being due to tho Corporation fur arrears of rates, rents over one year owing, and kerbing, the sum of L 753 19s 3d, together with 1. 993 5s for waterworks debentures sold. They recommended, as there weie several parties in arrears for rent, that the clerk should write to ihem, giving them a reasonable time to pay, or to make a satisfactory arrangement, failing which to han't over the accounts to thesohcitoi for recovery ; and that the clerk should also take stepo for tho recovery of tho amount duo for kerbing. Further, that measurement should bo taken from the survey map for that portion owing by the Government, and that tho tolicitor’s opinion should he taken in reference to Mr Styles’s application to retain money due to contract for waterworks, and Mr Pearce’s dishonored order. Tho Council then adjourned lor one month.
