THE LAKE OHOU MYSTERY.

Sergeant Smith, who has for the past ten days been searching the country rouni ah'ut, Lake Ohou for traces of Martin Cunningham, the supposed murderer of the unfortunate man Hannah, has returned to Oamoru unsuccessful, no trace whatever hj vlng been discovered. Cunningham is known to have had but one day's provisions when the two men left the station, and he do. a not appear to have obtained any subsequently from any of tha thepherds' huts. As the shepherds are now cut mustering he may hive entered some of the huts unperceived and helped himself, but if so it must have been to such small quantities as would not bo missed. What has become of him remains a mystery. The murdered man appears to have been killed i by a siuglo blow struck from behind and dislocating his neck, and it is conjectured that the two men must have quarrelled, an 1 that Cunningham, after striking the unlucky blow, set the boat adrift with tho corpse and fled, or, it may be, drowned himself in the lake ; though in the latter case it is strange that the body has not float d and been found before this. Against this latter supposition, it ia however said that Cunningham bears a bad character, and being well acquainted with the country, possibly made good his escape between tho time of the murder and search being instituted.
