THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW

The Royal Arcade to-day wears a "gay and aspect, the annual exhibition of the Royal Hotticultural Society of bfinjj held there. 'J he ends of the Arcade are closed in with canvas ; and after three o'clock a charge was made for admission. There was a considerable display of banting, and the shops were made to look their best —the exhibition of $ pictures in the now shop of Messrs Clifford and Braithwaite, and a self-acting fountain exhibited by Mr Hart, being the principal attractions There was a fair collection of exhibits at the show, but the number of exhibitors, and especially of competitors, for the Society's prizes vr&B small. The roses attracted most attention, and there was a very good show of this queen of flowers. A stand of forty-five exhibited by Mr Anderson, of the Water of I eith. was especially noteworthy amongst the collection. On this stand were two or three gigantic specimens of "Paul Neron." The roses shown by the gardeners were also very good, and one or two trays of pansies were as ptirc as any we have seen exhibited in Dunedin. Mr C. Lawence filled one table with a large and choice variety of flowers, mostly bedding plants, while Mr Edwards, of Forbury, ethibiteda remarkably fine lot of cabbage, cau- i I flowers, potatoes, gooseberries, and rhubarb. There was no novelty on exhibition to-day, the whole* display being of a very ordinary character. Many of the exhibits suffered from the unsightly stands on which thay were p'aced, the bouquets were spilled by the large display of paper around them, and the " get-up " of many of the plants rtilected ittle credit on the taste of the growers. There is to be a promenade concert this evening, under the direction of Her Schott, arid no doubt the admirable progrimme provided, al©- g with the flower show, will attract a large number of visitors to the Arcade.
