REPRESENTATION OF PORT CHALMERS.
To the Editor, SIR, —Your report of the deputation from'the Anti-Centralist League ” to his Honor the Superintendent, impels me, at the risk of being considered presuming, to trouble you with a few remarks. In the first place, I observe that one member of the deputation, Mr "W. Faruie, is described as “of Port Chalmers.” Mow. as I think this is likely to convey a false impression as to the feelings ol the electors of Port Chalmers, I wish to explain that that gentleman, although at one time a respected resident and Town Councillor of Port Chalmers, has not resided there for, I think, the last four or dvo years, and Las consequently scarcely any mmc right to be described as “of Port Chalmers” than the Hon. W. 11. .Reynolds, .Mr W. ,T. M. Larnach, or any other absentee doctor. Again, the electors will, I fancy, feel excessively obliged to Messrs Rossbotham and Armstrong for their cool assumption that any nominee of die “AmiCentralist licaguor even o. his Honor himself, has only to show himself and be returned by the constituency of Port Chalmers. Mr Macandrew, with his invariable good sense, took the proper view of the situation, when he said that ho did not for a moment advocate or assume for himself such a position, and added, “ The electors are supposed to have, judgment, and I am sure they will be found exercising it.” Mr Macandrew’s election is certain, and deservedly so ; indeed, very many of the electors who differ from him loto ado on the question, “Provincialism v. Centralism,” would nevertheless vote for him as a man and as a friend to Port Chalmers, against all comers, Provincialist, Centralist, or Separatiouist; but it is, I think, equally certain that the constituency as a body would never submit to be nictated to in their choice of a representative by the “ Anti-Centralist League ” or auy other body of men.—l am, &c.,
John Drtsdalt, Port Chalmers, December 9.
