ELECTORAL NOTES.

We hear that Mr J. P, Armstrong will be brought forward for the City, Mr Leonard Harper addressed the electors of the Cheviot district on Monday night, but a resolution in favor of Mr Ward, a local candidate, was carried.

Wa are authorised to state that Sir F. D. Bell has retired from the contest for Waikouait.i, for reasons which he will state shortly ; and that Mr T. L. Shepherd does not intend to staud for the Dunstan or any other constituency, as he has made up his mind to retire from political life. Our Queenstown correspondent informs us that four candidates are in the field for the Lakes seats, viz, Mr Leary, Dunedin ; Mr Booth, of Arrowtown ; Mr M‘Bride, sen., and Mr Mauders. The number is likely to be increased. r i he campaign opens at Macetown, and Arrow on Saturday next. No writ has yet been received. Opinions differ in various portions of the district,

For the Grey seats there are no less than nine candidates either declared or regarded as probable—Messrs Newton, Woolcock, Guinness, Comiskey, M‘Guire, Reeves. Dungan, Morris—and by proxy, Sir Julius Vogel. If all these are nominated, the contest will undoubtedly rest between Sir Julius Vogel. Messrs Newton, Woolcock, Guinness, and Comiskey. The others cannot bo regarded as having any probable chance of being returned.
