HARBOR BOARD.
At the Board’s fortnightly meeting yesterday there were present—The Superintendent (in the chair), Messrs Reid, M'Neil, Davie, Towsley, Reeves, MTCinnon, and Cargill. Tie leading lights are to be erected on the sandspit, on the s - te of the present leading beacons. They will be fixed whbe lighfs, and will show over an arc of 901 eg. from S.S.E. to W.S.W., and will be exhibited on and after the Ist April, 1876.
la reference to the Inspector’s report rt dredging, Mr Cargill menb’oned that he had received a letter which called in question the reports of the quantity of stuff dredge i, the writer assorting that the punts only held half the stuff represented. The Engineer was requested to have one of the punts measured. With reference to the'' Boating Club’s application to shift their floating boating-house be* tween Stuart street jetty and the training-wall, xt was pointed out that the spot chosen was exactly where the leclamation was proposed to be commenced ; and it was suggested between Stuart street and Pelichet Bay jetties would suit. Tha matter was referred to the Engineer.
It was agreed to allow Messrs Sparrow and Co. the use of canal opposite their works, unt’.l such time as it was required to close it up, Mr Walkem offered to take charge of the Powder magazine at Dunedin and Port Chalmers, at the rates now paid him, with the exception of Port Chalmers, which, he asked, should be raised from one penny to twopence per keg, on account of the distance of the magazine from Port; or to lease the magasines on terms. i'he Secretary reported that the lowest tender from boatmen at the Port to convey powder from the magazine was sixpence per Keg, which Mr M‘,N eil said was simply pxohibitory. The matter was adjourned to enable the Secretary to ascertain what terms Mr Walkem was prepared to offer. Messrs Kincaid, M’Queen, and Co. made a claim of L‘2oo for damage d me to machinery through the breakage of the crane at tha Rattray street Wharf. Mr Mids, manager for the Harbor Company, contended tlxat 'tho Board was in equity liable, as the public looked to them to keep their cranes in proper order, and able to undertake the work they were intended for. Xt was stated that the accident arose through the machinery being lifted by improper appliances. The Board declined all responsibility, as the crane was leased. It was decided to keep the Broad Bay and Piirtobello jetties in repair. The Rattray street wharf contractors obtained a progress payment, it being reported > that they had to-day finished another 300 feet of their contract, making COO foet in all, and that another 100 feet would be completed in a few days, weather permitting.
