CITY COUNCIL.
> There is every indication of a long meeting ■ on Tuesday. The Order Paper contains several notices, which are sure to provoke considerable ’ discussion. The priccipa' of these are in the names of Councillors Reeves and Isaac. The first mentioned will move : That tenders bo called for forming, kerbing and ; channelling the following streets as recommended by the Medical Officer of Health in his letter of the 13th October;—St. Andrew street, from Cumberland to Leith street; the whole of Castle street, Clarendon street, Grange street, Leith street, Clyde street (west side), Athol place, low pertion of Forth street, Union street, from George street to nver, St. David street to river, Cumberland street, t mom Frederick street to river, Dundas street (south side), Howe street (south side), and that Castle street, from Howe street to Brook street, be metalled. That owing to the great increase in the consumpf'.on of water iu this City, and to obviate the possibility of the supply for either domestic or machinery purposes running short in the future, it is "esirable to take the Water of Leith for additional water supply for the City under the powers given the Cor-porat-ion by the Dunedin Waterworks Extension Act, 1875; that with this view the Water Supply Committee be_ empowered to negotiate with the riparian proprietors as to the amount they would require ns compensation for the water they may be deprived of, and on this being ascertained report to the Council. The notice in the name of Cr Isaac is That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable that the Corporation solicitors should he instructed to examine into the Crown Grants and other sources of the title of the several riparian proprietors and claimants, iu order that they may fu vl i 30 Council as to ths nature and extent of the legal rights (if any) of those persons to the exclusive use of the Water of Leith. That on the carrying of the foregoing resolution, a committee ha appointed of the following gentlemen to bring up a_ report as to the best means of the further extension of the water supply to the City, viz: Crs. Reeves, Chapman, Brown, the Mayor, and mover.
