Would it uot be much better fur utago to have taxation reduced I y the amount of the proposed subsidies and omen proposed payments out of consolidated revenue, and let the peop.e s end the money s > saved to them on loads, ed ;catiou, police, &c., direct out ot their own pockets? * -cm, wh.t advantage is it to us to have our education reserves secured to the Province when iu our case education is to be made a first charge against those reserves, but in the case of other Provinces education is to be paid out of the consolidated revenue? Besides paying for cur o.vn education out of our educational laud revenue the people of Otago under the proposal will he contiibuting one half through the consolinated revenue of the cost ot education in other Provinces. Is this what he calls equity, or should it be tolerated by the people of ntago? I s y certainly not. Our motto ought to be : “ Reduction of indirect taxation, and localising ot direct taxation and expenditure.'’—! am, &e., _ Mentor. December 2.
