CITY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the City Council was held at three o’clock this afternoon to consider the question of the purchase of the freehold of the University Buildings either as a Town Hall or for other purposes. Besides the Mayor, there were present—Councilors Grant, Gibson, Reeves, Woodland, Campbell, Isaac, Brown, Chapman, and Mollisdn. Mr W. H. Mansford, clerk to the University Council, wrote stating that the time for receiving tenders had been extended to December 1. On the motiea of Or. Grant it waa resolved to consider the matter in Committee. The following report of the Financial Committee was read:— Tour committee bogs to report having carefully considered the question of the advisability or otherwise «t purchasing the freehold of the Otago University buildings. Your committee recommends that the Council shall tender for the frehold (subject to Mr Thoneman’s lease) the sum of (1.21,000) twenty-one thousand pounds, date of transfer to bo hereafter arranged. The report was adopted, provided that possession bo given to the Corporation by the Ist of March next.
