THE BOARD OF HEALTH.

(To the Editor) Sir. — 's a citizen I pro est against the laxity of the Board in permitting steamers and sading vessels arriving from Melbourne to pass without any inspection. One of the latter is now discharging at the cross .wharf abutting on Eattrav street wharf, having run across in eight days. Is there any wonder that scarlet fever has broken out in the City? Probably before it is stamped out whole families (as in Melbourne) may be either practically or wholly decimated. Who is to blame if not the Board when they are, humanly speaking, endowed with the power of preventing or modifying such a scourge, ft is to be hoped that immediate action will be taken both as regards the present case in Maitland street and the arriving of vessels at Port Chalmers and Dunedin. The over crowding of Melbourne steamers is a predisposing cause of sickness and infection, which being illustrated in the case of the last steamer from Melbourne demands immediate atte tion. The health officer should endeavor to trace how this < ase has arisen with the view of preventing further extension of this malignant fever. —I am, c.. Citizen. Dunedin, November 25.
