The following report of the captain is published by the ‘ Lyttelton Times —“ On Monday afternoon we wore about twenty miles to tho seuth of Akaroa Heads, when the wind veered round to the southwest, with every appearance of a gale. We ran in towards tho Peninsula, but for some time, owing to the mist, we could not distinguish the outline of the coast. The wind increased very much, and after a short time, having shortened sail, running under small jib and two reefs in the mainsail, we hit the gap of the Heads exactly. We kept her well in the centre, the wind coming in tremendous squallsone after another struck us, and in luffing her up to catch one of them, the vessel having no way at the time, the squall followed her round and filled the sails so that she went over on her broadside, not giving us a moment. Tho violence of tho squall was more than ever I had seen before. I was under water several minutes, being entangled in the mizeu sheet The male had just gone down tho companion to see what was the time, end he must have got out only by a miracle. 'The Thames, ketch, fortunately was coming up behind us, and succeeded in getting all of us oil in safety. There was such a tremendous sea running, and the squalls were so frequent, that we could not let go mu- anchor,” The vessel was insured in the South British for LSOO. SHIPPING TELEGRAM.
