i Wei are not responsible for th* opinion* expressed by our correspondents, j QUACK MEDICINES. To the Editor. Rlß,—ln your issue of last evening appeared a strange article, I say a most Btrange artwle, signed by a person styling himself Philanthropy." 11 should y-rymuch like to know who this individual is. la he one of the neglected me licos of our City who.se talent in his own profession hns yet to be discovered, who, being under the silent condemnation of the public would strive to mend his own hopeless case by casting a stigma upon wel -known useful remedies, and a class of men who, although not entitled to a professional foe, are often of far more service thau some specimens of the medical profession that we have in the Colonies, who have got their diplomas goo-dues* knows how, and have uenerjilly moie deaths to their credit tlun cur. s ; or is he some fiend of scribbling propensities who has been sat on by such a one? Whether or no it matters little, as tiie letter upon the faee of it shows such a vast amount of ignorai.ee—such a vast amount of presumptuous : on—that any right-minded person would condemn it at first su: lit. Can " Philanthropy" substantiate any of the gross assertions he has seen tit to make » He does not know how to spell Steedman's powders properly ; can he tell me their composition, effect, &c. ? If " Philanthropy " has come across a case where a child's constitution has been destroyed by taking Steedman's powders, if this public benefactor would state a caße where a persou's constitution has been weakened and time of life shoitened by taking a few pills when he thought necessary then I may allow " Philanthropy " to wear his laurels as a benefactor to his race and exposer of exist!ug eVl i s ' but until such tiuje < J > on behalf of the trade, object most strongly to such wholesale slanderous statement,.—most ptrongly "bum t0 such a contemptible attempt at .Philanthropy's," and would denounce the wrif er as an intellectual scavenger, one of those who are ever groping in the mud and ever ready to bespatter a go. d cause with their own unseemly filth.—l am, &c , ,.' CITY WATER SUPPLY.
To tlie Editor. Slß,—Your correspondent " Ratepayer " will allow me to o?rect a trifling error made by him in his letter published lust evening He says :-" The Corp nation B 11, us introduced by th<j Council, provided for full compensating water to them (the riparian right holders) and 1 lie. Bill did nothing of the kind ; on the conteary, it expreifciy absolved the Corporation irom liability "t 0 make any compensation to riparian in the event of a dry season making it impossible to supply them with a proper quantity of water," sea clause 9. If Ratepayer" has a copy of the Bill as introduced, he will bfl able to verify my extract: if hj« has not, 1 would suggest that he should make himself acquainted with the facts before endeavoring to shield the Corporation at the expense of those persons who only asked for a fair compensation to be ascertained in 'ft fair manner ; and who, I take the liberty of saying, were perfectly justified in resisting by every legitimate means the insertion of the absurd clauses proposed by the Corporation.—l am, &c., r, v .t , Citizen. Diinedin, November 12. [Tills letter whs ive ived too late for insertion yesterday.- Ed ES] To the Editor. _ Sik,—l observe a letter in last evening's issue of your paper, signed «« ratepayer," which, if allowed to remain unnoticed by the riparian proprietory mi K „t lead the public to fancy it was correct. Allow mv. to inform *' Uatepayer" th t he has either never read the Bill referred to, or he must be staring wilful falsehoods should ' Ratepayer" be inclined to favor us with any in re lelters on the subject, I shall be prepa: ed to reply to them if he will sign hiß proper name —I am, &c, .U 8 WILH N, __ , Well Park Brewery.
