HARBOR BOARD.
At a special meeting of this body,' held to-day, at which were piesent Messrs Keid (in the chair), M‘Neil, Turnbull, Davie, Beeves, Tewsley, and Cargill, the following business was transacted:— In reference to Mr H. Guthrie’s letter vt shed accommodation, the Board declined to purchase the Kaitangata Coal Company’s shed as suggested, but decided to communitate with the Commissioner of Customs with a view to facilitating the discharge of lighters. The Board declined to agree to Mr X. Ramsay’s suggestion that vessels lying at the old wharf should be exempted from payment of charges, but undercook to consider on its merits every case brought under their notice. In answer to Mr Whitelaw’s letter, asking the Board to reconsider their decision as to : his fine, it was decided on further consideration ‘ that the flue should be reduced to L 5; but it was intimated that in future the full penalty i would he exacted. j In accordance with a communication from the Telegraph Department the E-.ard agreed to ; provide the necessary station accommodation ) at the Heads for signalling vessels from there, j Mr John Logan wrote obucting to the Board , filling up Pelichet Bay. I The Board next considered the various ro- - commendations of the Engineer, as reported to i the last meeting. It was decided that a new cyliudershouldbecastforthos.s. Peninsula, that three punts should b * constructed of hardwood; j that the training-wall should be removed from j the end of the present wharf contract to the red bearon ; and to extend tlie wharf contract from the end of the present contract north along the front of the line of reclamation to the side of the first import tioal dock—a little beyond Stuarb street. This extension will be carried from that point to the shore end, and from one side of th~ dork, The Engineer was ordered to prepare plans and specifications, with a view to inviting tenders for the work. The Engineer was also instructed to prepare plans, with a view to calling fm- tenders for an additional row ef piling in front of the cross wharf from Rattray street to Jetty street. At present the pil-s are only driven some Lift, and it is proposed to put in long piles so as to allow' of dredging alongside them. With regard to dredging operations, it was decided to request the 1 ngineer to furnish a report, showing the time that would be occupied and the proba le cost of dredging a channel 100 feet wide and giving a depth of 18 feet at low water. On Mr Cargill’s motion it was decided to meer, in future at 2.MU p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month, i he Hoard adjourned till Wednesday at 2.20 p.m., when the icst of the Engineer’s report will be eon idered.
