FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE POET CHALMERS RAILWAY PIER.
An accident, attended with fatal results, oecurred at the railway pier this morning to a man named Alfred Smith, who had been employed on the pier since the opening of the line, and whose duty it was to attend and shunt f ho trucks from the various vessels. Shortly after ten this morning, while three loaded trucks ware being drawn from the ship Zealandia with a horse, the deceased went between them for the purpose of putting down the catch of the couplings, when his foot must either have slipped nloug the rail or else have got jammed between the check-rail. As ho foil, the front wheel of the second truck passed over him. Upon hearing his cries the trucks were stopped without delay, and he was picked up and carried to the waiting-room. At this time it was only supposed that his right leg had been broken ; bu'v on Urs. Drysdaleand Pearde a trending and examining the man, they found that the wheel must have passed over hi* thigh and side, as his bowels were pressed down close to his thigh. Death speedily put an end to his sufferings. An inquest will be held to-morrow by Dr. O'Donoghue.
