Assaults. —David Parris, second officer of f he barque Elizabeth Graham, was fined 10s and costs for assaulting a seaman be onging to that vessel nam.d Livingdale, Frederick Bullin, a seaman, was charged with assaulting William Ross, chief officer of the ship Otago, on the 19th of September while on a voyage from tendon to t Hago. It appeared that about 7 a.m. on tha morning in question the prisoner came out of vhe forecastle d or ami struck the chief officer under tbc left ear and knocked him down. In answer to the Bench Captain Hood stated that the prisoner’s conduct duiiug the voyage had been generally good.—Primmer, who pleaded guilty, stated that the chief officer had offered to forgive him if he > pologised which he had dono Ho was sentenced to seven days’ hard labor. ATTEMPTING TO BROACH CARGO.—Thomas Beattie and Brand's Daw were charged upon the information of Captain Hood, master of tilt ship Otago, with carrying a naked light in tha hold of the vessel while at sea, on the 19th August, whereby they endangered the lives of those on board.—From the evidence of John ■uthor, second officer of the vessel, it appeared that on the day in question hj« saw the prisoners with a naked light among the cargo close to the fee- hold, where there was a number of casks of liquor. Witness ordered them on deck and informed the captain.— Captain m Hood stated that when the men came alt to him on the day in question lie offered to forgive them if their conduct was good during the remainder of the passage, but he was serry to say it had been very bad since. There was a quantity of spirits close to where the men were found,— His Worship, in sentencing the prisoners, stated that the captain would have done wrong had he forgiven them. If it were not for detaining the ship, he would have sent the case before a jury. He sentenced each of the prisoners to three months’ hard labor. Breach of the Peace.—John Bridgeman was lined 5s ami costs.
