A CRUCIAL TEST.

To the Editor, Sir, —I noticed an article in one of your contemporaries recently under the above heading. It related to somebody having fired a bullet at a “materialised ” sp : rit with the same success that tbo Irishman had in shooting at a bird—- “ the first time he hit him he missed him.” It may reasonably be concluded that the Strathmore, bound from this port from London, has gone down, with most, if not all, of her crew and passengers. Does not this give an opportunity for a crucial test of Spiritualism, which Would have the additional advantage of being pract : cal in its outcome. I, to a certain extent, and many others to a very great degree, are interested in ascertaining, if possible, how. when, and where the unfortunate craft came to grief. Will some of the many mediums here, who profess to be tbo channels through which departed spirits hold converse with this world, obtain from some of the deceased Strathmoreans the desired information? In order to prove the authenticity of the intelligence, it _ would be well that the mediums should obtain versions of the catastrophe simultaneously from, say the captain, one of the sailors, and one of the passengers; and this in the presence of disinterested witnesses. Should their witnesses agree together, it would do much to further the cause of Spiritualism ; while if they are unable or unwilling to satisfactorily settle this comparatively simple matter, may not the public fairly entertain doubts of the bond fides of the alleged manifestations —I am, &i-,. J. G-, I’. Dunedin, October 29.
