THE MUSEUM.
To the Editor , Sir,—Your coir smmdent, “Experentia Docet,” reminds me mo much of the flavor of certain member? of the present Government that there cannot he much doubt as to the authorship, unless indeed it bo the product “o’ a lickspittle o’ like ilk.” A civil servant a« a private member of society, or as a memb-r of a scientific institute, must not open his mouth on any subject or grievance that might throw obloquy on tho po-.veis that be. Bespatter the chief with fulsome praise if you like, claw his lieutenant and they will wag their tails with delight, but even in the interests of science and the community amongst whom they live, let civil servants in private life not dare to express an opinion that might be construed into censure on those wno ought to be but the servants of the public, but who under the present regime arrogate to themselves the title of musters, exeicise the right of lords, and act the r6k of tyr.nls. I feel certain that but a small minority of the community have any sympathy with your correspondent’s sentiments, and that on the contrary there is a very strong approval of the remarks made by the member* at the late meeting of the Institute on tho subject of the museum building. Were it not. r.hafc many who take an interest in the museum are of the opinion that as soon as Mr Macandrrw and Mr Kidd return the building will be proceeded with, your columns would ere this have been crowded with letters upon the subject. In the meantime I must protest agaimt the doctrine that civil servant? ought to be del-aired from exercising*their a-shal rights as citizens, and be gagged excepting to praise their pro. ton. superior officers. -1 am, <&c., .
