Business, though not extraordinarily active, has been fair during tho week, the roads being good and rates of enriage moderate having caused'a regular demand for the, up-country districts. Tho balance of sugars, ex ITospcro were brought to the hammer on Tuesday. There was a fair attendance of the trade, but the biddings did not realise the demands of the importers, and consequently none wore sold. Tho arrival of Enid, from London, with a full general cargo, will keep tho market supplied with classes of goods that might otherwise have run short. Hennessy’s brandy is firm at last quotations. Bujk is also unaltered. The August, from Poo Chow, has arrived with the first of the new season’s teas. Samples have been shown, which indicate that they are of n very superior quality to last year's importations. They are expected to be landed next week. Candles’are firm at 10>d for Do Roub.dx and Brandon's, and lOld for prices. Kerosene io in good supply, but no alteration in price eau be quoted. In dried fruits, currants command 4;(d in casks aud cases, Eleiae raisins G 4 *d to 7d. sultanas I'd, migtcaiok Is. The market is completely cleared of figs. Butter is coming forward moro freely, and new season’s realises Is 4d. Chee»fe still vulea high, and caunoi he obtained under lid. There aro few changes in oilmen’s stores. THE LABOR MARKET.
Mr Skouo reports that the demand during the week for (own wants is very slack for the season. We are entitled to look for a derided change soon. Farm and station hands are always needed. Shearing will not bo fairly begun until about November loth. The building trade Is still Inactive. Storehands aud clerks are in slightly bettor demand. Female servants are constantly needed. Couples with small families are moving oil'.
