SANKEY’S HYMNS.

To the Editor, Sill, —Thu heresy-hunting “Indium” in your last evening's issue must be a queer animal, for not only does he make an ass of himself, but lie endeavors also to inveigle you into standing, as it were, godfather to him. Would the anxious “ Inquirer ” he sutprised to hear that there is a fair average amount of reference made to the Holy Spirit and His woik in the selection of “Sacred Songs and Solos” compiled by Mr Sankey ? Wi 11, them is. For instance, in “Jesus Loves Me,” the following lines occur : “ God’s holy spirit with mine doth agree, Constantly whispering—Jesus lows me.” Again, in “More to Follow ” :• - “ Have you felt the Spirit’s power Falling like the gentle shower, &c.” In “Nothing but Leaves” : “ The spirit grieves, over a wasted life.” In “ The Valley of Blessing” : “And Ills spirit and blood make nay cleansing complete.” In “Almost Persuaded” the undecided one is represented as saying—- “ Go, spirit, go Thy way.” Finally, in “Even Me” “ Pass me not, O mighty Spirit.” Suffer me also to remind “ Inquirer” of our Saviour’s own words: “I, if I be lifted up, will draw all man unto me ” It is Jesus, not the Holy Spirit, that is to be brought into prominence ; the iloly Spirit “shall not speak of hhnstdf.” In this matter, then, I fancy Messrs Moody and Sankey are not far out. Dear “ Inquirer,” pray don’t reply to this note. You can take satisf.ction from the reflection that you are not the first idiot who has rushed into print, nor is it probable that you will be the last. —I am, &c., J. G. r, Dunedin, October 20.
