Passengers : For Lyttelton—Mr and Mrs Coombea and family (six), Mr and Mrs Pootb. and family (four). For Wellington—Mr and Mrs Gibao Dees, Mrs Smith, Mrs Love. For Napier--Mr M'Millan; and oight in the steerage for all portw. The cuttsr Jane sailed yesterday for Shag Point.. The Union Co.'s p.s. Samson took her departure this morning for Oamnru. The ship Taunton commenced to discharge her cargo into lighters, for transmission to Dunedis. The Union Co.'s s.s. Bruco sailed last evening for Lyttelton. via Timaru. HWe have been shown some handsome articles intended for presentation to Dr Simpson by the pas. sengers in the ship Christian M'Ausland. They consist of a powerful binocular glass, ebony and silver tobacco jar, and silver match box. The whole were obtained from Mr J. Hislop, the two latter being manufactured on the premises. They are most creditable specimens of colonial jworkmanship. Tho sailors of the "ship Othello, lying at Newcastle, N.S.W., recently threw overboard a crimp who came after what is known as " blood monoy." The fellow went on board just before the ship loft the wharf and demanded his consideration money from the mate, who ordered him on shore. He refused to go, and kept oa pressing his claim, till the mate called the hands aft and ordered them to put tho fellow on shore. The vessel was then about twenty feet from the wharf, and the sailors having first " lambed him down," threw the man over the rail into the water. He maunged to swim ashore, and went home a wiser and a wetter man. TERRIBLE SHIPWRECK. We have news from Madeira that the ship Stuart Hahnemann, of Liverpool, capsized and sank ten days from Bombay, Of those on board the following were saved and landed at St. Helena : —Fraser, Peterson, Picardy, Rogers, Masters, Crumbv, Hunter, Poazer, and Clift. The men report that their vessel left Bombay on April 4, with forty-seven persons on board, and that for ten days the weather was fine. On the night of the 14th, however, a squall came on. The captain hauled down the flying jib and maintop-gallant-staysail, and as the ship was steadily going over he also let go the halyards. Nevertheless the vessel was thrown on her beam ends, and a heavy sea washed several men overboard, when she capsized. Nine of the crew escaped from the sinking vessel in a boat, which, though at first overturned, was afterwards righted. On righting her they found a monkey alive, tied to the thwarts, They searched tho next day for other survivors, but found none, until at ten at night they fell in with a boy named Thomas Crumby, floating alive on two planks. They also found six cocoanuts, and lived fifteen days upon the monkey, the cocoanuts, andfc ying fish which they managed to eatch. captain of the vensel, Alfred Van Norden,hi wife, three mates, and thirty-three of the w perished—in all thirtyeight persons. On April 27 the Austrian barque Blandina, bound for Falmouth, picked up the survivors, and on July 5 she landed the nine men at St. Helena. Of these, two, namely, George Masters and Peter Picardy, proceeded to Bremen in the City of Foochow, and two others, William Hunter and Thomas Crumley, went to Queenstown in an English barque on July 11, The remaining five have arrived at Madeira. The Stuart Hahnemann was a magnificent vessel of 2,000 tons, built at Dumbar ton by Messrs Macmillan, in 1874, and the voyage upon which she wa3 lost was her first. She was classed 100 A 1 at Lloyd's, and twenty years in red in the Liverpool book, and was owned by Messrs Stuart and Douglas, of Liverpool. The value of the ship, freight, and cargo, which consisted of nearly 14,000 bales of cotton, is estimated at 118 ',OOO. It is said that the insurances will fall chiefly upon London underwriters.- European Mail.
