CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held to-day; present—his Worship the Mayor and a full Council. The Colonial Secretary wrote, in reply to the Council's request to have an amendment made in the Dangerous Goods Act, that the Goverament considjred it advisable to follow as closely as possible the last English Acts ; and, in the absence of complaints from other parts of the Oelony, they did not think it advisable to introduce an amendment this session. The failure iu prosecutions had keen caused by a misquotation of a judgment of the Supreme Court by counsel for the defence, which wculd not have been allowed to pass had counsel been employed for the prosecution.—The Mayor mentioned that Mr I .umb had applied for legal assistance, but he did not deem it advisable that the ("ouneil should go to that expense Seeing that there had been so many cas- s before the Court and no convictions obtained, he had applied many times to have the Act amended, and Dr Pollen had promised to have this done next session. It was resolved to write to owners of sawmills in the City informing them that complaints had been made that half-burnt sr.wdust was allowed to blow about in the vicinity of the mills, *to the danger of the neighbors' houses, and asking them to take steps to remedy the same. On that clause of the Reserves Committee report, recommending: that the North or South Dunedin Recreition Grounds be let to Blondin, tight-rope walker, for LBO per month, being read, Cr. Isaac protested against the Corporation's reserves being let for "mountebank shows." Cr. Gramt explained that the money obtained for the lease of the ground was to be handed over to the Benevolent Institution. Cr. Isaac's motion, "That the clause be struck out' was negatived. The clause was ultimately altered so as to read that permission to use either recreation ground (optional) should be granted to ' hevalier Blondin on his handing over to the Benevolent Institution the sum of LBO. [Left sitting.]
