ArcKLANn, October 0. The Cyphrenes has arrived with the English and Ameiican mails. She left -an Fianciscn on September 14, New Zealand time, and Honolulu on the 23rd. Had fine, pleasant weath r thioughout. Passengers for New Zealand : Mi’ses Duncan, the Hon. G. S. Littleton, Hon. J. A. Balfour and servant, Mr and Mrs William Thompson, Capt. Petherbriogg. John M'Kellar, and C. S. Wesley. For Austialia: Capt. Audley Coote, the Lingaid i roupe, and fifty-five others. Cargo for Auckland : 200 cases almon, 130 bags rice, GO bales hops, 150 packages matches, 114 pack a-, ea merchandise, and a large cargo lor Australia, AMERICAN NEWS. A terrific storm broke over Chicago on the 10th September, causing immense destruction to shipping. A train was thrown into tho Mississippi River hy the rails spreading, and resulted in fifteen persons being seriously injured. At Uil c.ty lightning struck a large etude oil tank at the Imperial Refinery. Five tanks filled with oil and benzine were destroyed; altogether about 50,000 barrels were conBumed by the fire. The loss was 200,000 dols., and there was no insurance.
A frightful mgro slaughter occurred at Clinton, Massachusetts. Early iu Repterab-i there was a great riot first, in which the blacks Buffered heavily, and w»r« driven off. Un Saturday, the 4th Meptemher, 500 aimed whites arrived from Edwards and Bolton, and occupied Cliutou. Un Saturday tuese aud W cksturiers commenced slaughtering the negro s, aud killed in cold blood all they could find.
