CITY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted at yesterday’s meeting of the City Council after we went to press : Inspector Kimon complained of a nuisance on the property of Mr R, S. Dods, absent from the Province, bub whose agent is Mr E. Smith —The Mayor said the Council had no power to compel absonte°s’ attorney’s to abate nuisances. Referred to the Sanitary Committee, with power to act. The Surveyor reported on (ho question of a general system for the collection of all nightsoil throughout the city, and the conveyance of the same by railway (o the country districts, the object in view being the peimanent closing of the depOt on the Anderson’s Pay road. The report stated that the cost xvould be for depO’s and plant L4,05G, and the total working expenses per annum 15,500. Weic dry earth to he supplied to the houses and carted away with the nightsoil, the cost would be L1(i.500 per annum. The question had been raised whether, in view of the great annual expense which would have to hr incurred in a general sy stem, it would not be better to have a snnali s lea in barge mooi el at a j-tty in the mglit lying in the stream during the day, and, when full, emptying her cargo two or three mi en outside. T.daroa Head. Supposing that the manure could not be profitably di-posed of, this experiment is well worth consideration. Referred to the Sanitary Con mitlee.
Cr. Leaky proposed, and it was carried, that the Council rapply drain pipes to residents in sections between Fork place and Cargill street; the landowners to lay the pipes nt their own risk, so that the Council would not be held responsible for keeping the drain in repair, or for any other contingency. The Fire Brigade Committee reported having much satisfaction in being able to state that a new Dunedin Volunteer Fire Brig de has been formed, and that arrangements have been concluded between the Committe and the new Brigade.- It is understood that the Biiga le have already elected their captain and ofUccrs, and the Committee have no doubt th it the new Brigade will be quite prepared to assume active 3uty by about the Kith October, that being the day when the exigt-ipy Brigade is to disband.— iv'port adopted. The Water .Supply Committee report cl that although very considerable alterations had been proposed in I’arliament as regards the Dunedin Water Supply Extension Bill, Ifl'b, more par ticulirly us concerns the mode of settlement with the rimrian proprietors, the BUI, as drafted, might ho ultimately passed by the Colonial Legislature ; in any case, however, they recommended that the bill should not be withdrawn by the Council. The application of tho Friendly Societies’ Hall Company, for water supp'y to the Queen’s Theatre, to be used in case of fire, had been granted.
