Hokitika, September 27. Mr F. A. Learmonth, laud agent and immigration officer, met with a serious .accident from a pistol-shot to-day. He was preparing to shoot at a stray cat in the back-yard, when the pistol went off, and the ball entered near the heart. Little hopes of recovery are entertained.

Christchurch, September 27. George Graham Byes, formerly a clerk in the Christchurch Post-office, was committed for trial to-day for stealing letters. He had been suspended for some time, but no proof could be obtained until a short time ago, when a bundle of papers, including several letters addressed to other peopl-, was accidentally found between his box and the wall at the hotel where he had been staying. r l he police w-re sent for, and on the box being opened more letters addressed to other people were found.

Invercargill, September 28. Nine immigrants who left the quarantine station, were brought before the resident magistrate to-day under the 42nd clause of the Public Health Act. The information was afterwards amended so as to charge the accused as persons who had escaped from the quarantine station while being liable to be confined there and being so confused. The accused were fined 90s eicb and costs, the fines and costs amounting to LlO. They were paid by Mr George Bowes, a saloon passenger by the Christian M'Auslaud.
