THURSDAY, c EPTEMBEft 23. (Before H. S. Fish, Esq., and R. H. Learv. Esq., J. P.'s)

Drunkenness.—James King: was fined ss; Clara Heath 10s, in default forty-eight hours 1 imprisonment.

Larceny;— Frederick Young was charged, on remand, with stealing a pair of boots on the 9th inst., the property of James Hall, a seaman on the steamer Samson. -?tt was pro-ed in evidence that accused pawned the boots, and could not satisfactorily account for the way be became possessed of them.—Young was also charged with stealing a comforter and Crimean shirt, the property of Alexander Gillies.—He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each charge. Unlawful Detention op Property.— Helena Hickey summoned Sarah Gorman for detaining a quantity of house furniture, her property. -Defendant admitted having possession of the furniture, and was ordered to hand it over to complainant.

Kobbery of a 'Cheque.—Andrew Caluille was charged with having, on the 13th instant, stolen a cheque for the payment of Ll7 10s 9d, tbe property of James Wilson, brewer.—Prosecutor deposed that accused was in his employment, and witness having to leave the town a short time ago he left behind him three bank cheques, already signed, with instruc tions that prisoner was to get them filled in to meet current expenses of the firm. On his return to Dunedin witness learnt at the bank that one of the oheques had been presented, and Ll7 10d 9d paid on it, and also that priconer had absconded.—Henry Neil], watchmaker and jeweller, said prisoner bought a silver wi.tch, a gold chain, a locket and old albert from him on the 13th inst, and tendered the cheque produced in payment. Witness sent his boy with the cheque to the Colonial Bank, where it was cashed.—Albert Laruach, teller at tho Colonial Bank, identified the cheque produoed as one of Mr Wilson's which witnesb charged to his account on the 13th inst. -Prisoner,, haviug been cautl ned in the usual, form, said he pleaded guilty, and threw himself on the mercy of the Court. He was committed for trial at the ensuing session of the Supreme Court. On a further charge of stea ing a cheque for the payment of L 3113* 6d, prisoner w;>s* remanded until the following day.
