For Nelson—Mr Palmer. For Tarauaki—Mr Humphries ;„and four in the steerage.
. The s.s. Express returned":from the Bluff early this morning, and passed dp to Duiiftdin. The ketch Eliza M'Phee arrived this morning with a full cargo of timber from Cathu's River. • The Union Co.'s s.s. 'Bruce will leave the railway pier this evening for Timaru and l,ytveltou. The Union Co.'s s.s. Taupo, with cargo and passengers for the Northern ports, took her departure from the railway pier this afternoon. The p.s. Samson returned from Oamaru at t.45 yesterday, and steamed alongside the Taupo to discharge wool. Messrs Cargill and Gihbs, agents for the ship Oamaru, have received a telegram from London announcing the| arriva!| there of the Oamaru on September 9, after a passage of eighty-six days. | IThe s s. Easby left Sydney at noon on the <>th, and experienced strong S.W. and N. gules until her arrival off Cape Farewell,.when she encountered a heavy S.E. gale. On passing the entrance of Queen Charlotte Sound the gale increased, and Captain Kennedy deemed it advisable to run into Pictou for shelter, and for the purpose of communicating with his agents. Left Picton at 5 a.m. on the 16th, experienced very bad weather crossing the Straits, and a terrific yea in the Torawiti Eip. and amved at Wellington the same day ; left attain at 3.30 p.m. on the 20th, and called at Lytteltou; arrived oft the Heads at seven last night, anchored uutil daylight this morning, and theu steamed up alongside the hulk to discharge. We thank Captain Kennedy for repoit and exclianges.
ARRIVAL OF THE FRANCES LEWEY FROM NEW YORK.
The brigantine Frances Lewey, with a full caivo of Yankee notions—two-thirds of which is for this port, the remainder being for Wellington—sailed up on the 22nd inst with a light N.E. wind, under the charge of Pilot Moore, and anchored off Carey Bay. She has had a protracted passage of 137 days from New \ oik, which is attributed to adverse winds and strong gales. Captain Lewey reports leaving New York on the 7th May, with a S.E. wind; crossed the Equator on the 10th, ia long. 27.32; sighted the Brazilian oast and passed iristan D'Acunha; then had a heavy gale, the vessel being nova to for thiteen hours under her trysail and main staysail ; crossed the meridian of Greenwich on the 23rd, and that of the Cape on the 29th ; in lat. 43.20; experienced a severe gale, with tremendous high sea—the barometer boing at 29°—and was again hove-to for twenty-four hours ; passed the meridian of the Leuwin on the 28th August; thence to the Snares had a succession of heavy gales with high Reus, during which she was hove-to twice ; on the 6th September passed Tasmania, and on the 9th shipped a heavy sea, which washed everything movable off the deck, and started her watercasks and chain boxes, and filling the decks with water; passed the Snares on the 12th, having run down her easting between the parallels of 45 to 49; was off the Heads on the 15th, when the wind shifted to the S.S.W., and she was driven as far as Timaru ; thence had battling winds until yesterday morning, when she got a light N.E. wind, which enabled her to again make the Heads early this morning.
