There was a second charge against the same prisoner of stealing propei ty belonging to another seaman. —On th» application ot the police both chaiges were remanded till Thursday, to enable th« steamer to return from Oamaru—bail being allowed in his o»n recognisance of LlO and two sureties of LlO each.

Vagrancy.—Henay Birrell, a most disgust-ing-looking object, charged with having no lawful means of support, was sent to gaol for three months.

Mrs Diamond conducts her house very well. — The Bench thought the case would be met by a dismissal with a caution. It did not appear that Mrs Diamond knew that Donnoghue was being served with drink, and they dismissed the case", so that publicans might know through the columns of the Press that the police intended to enforce the Act, and that might have tho effect of stopping Sunday trade throughout the town. The case was dismissed more with a view of giving notice to the trade generally than anything else. Obscene Language.—Helen Hesman alias Carbery, charged with using obscene language in a righl-of-way off Stafford street, was find 60s and costs; in default seven days' imprisonment.
