CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening ; present—The Mayor, Crs. Brown, Campbell, _ Chapman, Gibson, Grant, Isaac, Lsary, Mollison, Quick, Reeves, Roberts, and Woodland.

Correspondence was read on the subject of the vote of LI,OOO by the Provincial Council for improvements near* the railway station. Government was desirous to know what works were proposed to be undertaken, and their estimated cost. The Surveyor reported that the estimates amounted to more than L2,(i00. The Halfway Bush Road Board sent in their claim (L 200) for rates on the Waterworks, The works we re-rated at L 4,000, the same as last year.

Chevalier Blondin, tight-rope walker, applied through his agent for a piece of ground whereon to exhibit. Referred to the Reserves t Jomrnittee.

Mr Ritchie wrote enclosing a memorandum from Mr Genever on Mr Courtis’s report, and a copy of:the valuation made same time ago by Messsrs Burt and Moody. The letter was referred to the Lighting Committee, the valuation Mr Ritchie wished treated as' a private document.

Messrs f. Sparrow and T. Henderson asked permission to erect on the reclaimed land next to Messrs R. S. Murray, LlOl 15a; William Couston, LSO ; Charles Flexman, L7B 2s 2d; A, Solomon, Lls ss; North and Scoullar, L 8 0; Geo. Munro, L3O; Isaacs and Marks, LBS; Walter Wright, L2O 10s; E. M'Liskey, LIOO, They were referred to the Finance Committee to investigate. A letter was read complaining of the injury inflicted on the Cricket Oval by the Football Clubs playing there so late in the season, but the Council resolved not to inteifere in the matter.

T.- r, ll ?>¥- ATOR remarked on the fact that the rive Brigade had resolved not to have their usual annual dinner, but he thought no citizen of Dunedin could object to the Brigade enjoying themselves on their anniversary night, because their twelve months would terminate on that night. He thought it would be the duty of the Council to see tl: atj the Brigade had their annual spread as usual. —Cr. Lkary moved, and Cr. Isaac seconded—“ That, in consideration of their valuable services, the Council invite Captain Wain and the Brigade to a dinner on the usual day.” Carried unanimously.

The Fire Brigade Committee reported twenty gentlemen intimated their willingness to join a new Brigade. The committee recommended terms as follows:—The Corporation to provide all necessary plant, and pay the cost of repairs and maintenance ; an annual sum of L 590 to be handed to the Brigade to cover all other expenses ; any surplus of the payment of all expenses to form a Life and Accident Insurance Fund ; the_ Brigade to consist of forty members, inclusive of officers ; the L2OO per annum from the Insurance (Companies to be paid to the Corporation as part of the LSOO referred to above; all voluntary contributions to go to a Members’ Fund, to be dealt with at the discretion of the Brigade. In the event of the Brigade at any time resigning or disbanding, any accumulated contributions from the Corporation to be and remain the property of the Corporation; the Council to be furnished with periodical returns, showing the Brigade’s outlay and charges from time to time, and the Brigade’s accounts to be statedly audited by the City auditors. The Government had been communicated with relative to an arrangement by which it was hoped that the lives of members of the Brigade could fee insured during the continuance of membership. So soon as a sufficient number of gentlemen responded to the Council’s invitation to join a new Brigade, the Mayor purposed convening a meeting of the proposed members, in order to elect their officers arid to do other business incidental to tire satisfactory and permanent working of the Brigade. The report was adopted. The Sanitary Committee recommended, inter alia, that two additional men be employed to assist Inspector Nimon in house-to house visitation ; salary of each to be at the rate of Ll5O per annum. Report adopted. The Water Supply Committee reported that the Town Clerk had been instructed to advertise that all persons in arrear with water rates who do not pay within six days after receiving notice of the intention of the Council to cut off the water from their premises, will have their water supply cut off. Report adopted. Ihe Public Works Committee recommended, inter alia, that tenders be called for the unfinished portion of the Town Belt Hoad at once, the line of road being already surveyed and pegged. Agreed to.
