THE NEW PRINCESS’S THEATRE.

The design for the new Princess’s Theatre has been entrusted to Messrs Mason and Wales, architects, and the following particulars will be found of interest ; The building is designed to accommodate about 1,200 persons. Particular attention has b en bestowed to the arrangement of tire seats, so that everyone may have a perfect view of the stage. The acoustic properties of the intended building have been carefully studied, such materials of the internal work being carefully selected as are calculated to aid the progression and diffusion of sound. The dress circle will be entered from High street by a flight of stone steps from the vestibule; from the half pace of stair the steps branch off at right angles on each side leading to two landings, from which the dress circle is to be entered, and from which doors will open into the cloak rooms. The plan of the dress circle is on the approved principle of the horse shoe form, with private boxes close to the stage, and with seating accommodation for 250 persons. Tho stalls and pit are to be approached from Stafford street by two wide corridors, under the level of the stage, inclined planes being formed into the pit and stalls. The stalls will have seating accommodation for 150, the pit for 772. The floor of the stalls and pit rises as it recedes from the stage, giving a clear line of sight to everyone. The ceiling willlbe domed and ribbed, tho spandrils of the circle arches being filled with ornamental cut work. Tho decoration will be of a light and elegant description, principally white and gold. The tympanum of the proscenium areh will bo tilled with a painting illustrative of the drama, and surmounted by a suitable inscription. The stage will have a depth of 40ft., and will have ample dressing-room accommodation over the slides; the green room and property room being under the stage. The painting room, capenteis' shop, and store rooms for scenery will be in the roof over the stage, and will be approached by ft stair from the back of the stage. The green room entrance is from Stafford street.

The dimensions of the main budding, exclusive of vestibule and stair to dross-circle, will be 108 ft by fitift from out to out, the auditorium being 64ft by 63ft, The height of the ceiling will be about 36ft from the pit floor. Every care will be taken to have the theatre thoroughly ventilated, so a« to secure perfect comfort even in the most crowded house.

The whole plan is commodious and elegant, and reflects great credit, on the taste and skill of Mr Stevenson, of the office cf Messrs Mason and Wales.
