THE FIRE BRIGADE.
A meeting of the Dunediu Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening (Captain Wain in the chsir) for the purpose of considering the following letter, received from the Corporation of Dunedm, via.;—
Town Clerk’s Office, Dunedin, August 11,1178. Referring to the subject of your interview yesterday afternoon with a special Committee of the City Council, asd with Vlr Reid ae representing the Fire Insurance Companies Association, relative to the Dunedin Volunteer Fire Brigade and its threatened resignation, I have the honor to ask you to be good enough to ascertain the terms or conditions upon which (if any) the officers and members of the Brigade would be willing to continue their well-appreci-ated services to the City. I was authorised te say that if the proposal is likelv to meet the views of the Brigade, the City Council would be prepared to vote an annual sum of money by way of meeting, conjointly with the Insuraneo Companies, the Brigade’s yearly expenses, and to do this in a spirit of liberality, such sum to cover all the Btigade’s costs and charges, except plant. Coat of the plant and maintainence thereof to he from time to time an exclusive charge on the Corporation of Dunedin. I am directed to add that the Council is in eveiy way desirous that arrangements with the Brigade should be placed on a permanent and satisfactory foooting. After discussion, Lieutenant Hobbs moved, and Treasurer Robertson seconded, “ That a letter be sent to the City Council, statins that we do not desire to make any terms or alter the decision already arrived at,” Fireman Bowers moved, and Fireman Fraser seconded the following amendment. —“ That a letter be sent to the (,’ity Council, informing that a special meeting of the Brigade was held for the purpose of taking into consideration the letter receive * by them, the statement contained therein being to the effect that the Council is desirous ot making amicable arrangements with the Brigade ; also, asking them on what terms the Brigade would be willing to withdraw their resolution at present arrived at. The Bri gade having duly considered the letter and the question referred to, they have come to the conclusion that they will be willing to reform at the expiration of their notice of resignation, providing the Council would be willing to hand over to the Brigade the su of L6OO per annum to pay all expenses of the Brigade, iucl tiding fires, fee. ; such sum to be exclusive of cost of wear and tear of plant.” The resolution was carried, only the proposer and seconder of the amendment voting against it. ’
