THE DISQUALIFICATION OF MABEL AND THE ‘DAILY TIMES.’

To the Editor. Sir, —I was surprised to see m the * Daily Times’ of Monday an article headed- “The Mabel Case Revived.” and I consider, judging by the style in which the effusion is written, that it was suggested by persons interested in continuing the disqualification. It was stated in the above-mentioned article that it would be unwise to reverse the decision already arrived at by the Dunedin Jockey Club ; but I think all lovers qf racing would be glad to see Mabel again competing on the Forbury Racecourse for the various prizes offered by the Club. The present owner of Mabel is a gentleman who would run the mare on her merits; therefore there can be no apprehension or even suspicion of foul play in the future, which I look upon as a great reason why the disqualification should) be removed, I may mention a fact which is well known to the members of the Jockey Club, viz., that Captain Hutchison is now out of the Province; and, as the disqualification of Mabel was intended as a punishment to her owner, and to the jockey who pulled her, this object has been accomplished. As a supporter and contributor for many years to the funds of the Jockey Club, I protest against any pressure being brought to hear upon the decision of this important matter before the case has been formally brought under the notice of the committee. Your paper has consistently paid a proper degree of attention to sporting matters generally, and has always advocated fair play, I therefore trust you will see fib to insert this communication.—lam, &c., A Member of the D.J.O. Dunedin, August 11. [lt is against our rule to allow the appearance in the STAR of comments on questions which are subjudice ; but as, in this case, a contemporary has thrown open its columns for such a purpose, we insert the abo-m letter — without expressing any opinion on the matter —in a spirit of fair play.— Ed. 4 E.S.’]
