PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last evening; present—the Mayor Crs. M'Kinlay, M'Grcgor, Asher, Reid, Menelaus, Middleditch, Miller, and Dodson.
Correspondence was read ns follows From Mr Campbell, engineer, informing the Council that he had sent drawings of pipes for the waterworks to the inspector, and also had ascertained that the pipes had not been ordered from England, as stated by J\Jr Peatce; from Mr C, W, Black relative to a proposition by Mr Pearce to obtain waterworks plant from England; from Mr Weir, secretary of the Port Chalmers Choral Union, asking permission for the use of the Town Hall to hold their weekly meetings in (granted); from Mr G, S. Cooper, acting-Colonial Secre tary, acknowledging the receipt of eleoiion of Mr M‘Kinnon us Mayor; from Mr Maitin Salter, applying to lease section 15, Town Belt, at tlio rate of LI Is per annum (granted); from Mr Wylie, applying to lease half-an-aore of tl e I'own Belt, at the rate of L2 per annum (ordered to stand over until the railway works contract was taken); from Mr Blair, drawing the Council’s attention to the unsatisfactory’ m inner in which the waterworks arc progressing, and recommending that the coijt-.ict be taken away from the present contractor ; also stating that Mr Crawsl.aw, one of the contractor’s sureties, was willing to take up the
contract; also from Mr Joyce, Corporation solicitor, enclosing hi* opinion in reference to the waterworks contract. (The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Pearoo, enolosing the terms of the solicitor's letter) ; from Mr Calcutt, G-ovorument land assessor, iu reference to the large quarry (referred to the Corporation solicitor). ihe Mayor then retired, and Cr. Asher took the chair while the salary of his Worship waa considered, ihi the motion of Or. Menelaus, it was resolved that the allowance be L 55 per annum. The Mayor then returned and thanked the Council.
It was resolved that the allowance to the auditors should be L 5 5s each for their services for the twelve months; and that the clerk’s salary be raised from Ll2O to LISO per annum —the extra L3O to be charged to the Waterworks.
The following committees were then formed : —Finance, Water, Bath s and Cemetery : Crs. Asher, Keid, and Aleueiaus. Reset ves, Works, and Lighting ; Crs. • Miller, M‘Gregor, and M’Kinlay. Sanitary and Bye-laws: Crs. Asher, Reid, and Miller. The Mayor to be chairman of each committee.
The balance-sheet to August 1 was read and adopted. It showed the income to have been L 4.390 2s 3d, and the expenditure L 3,960 10s 2d, leaving a balance of L 42!) 12* Id,
