THE GASWORKS.

At the meeting of the City Council, held at four o clock this afternoon, to receive the report of Mr Curtis on the value of the Dunedin Gasworks, mains, and the matter of the lighting of the City generally, there were present th Mayor and all the Councillors.

Thu Matou (Mr WaHcr) explained that ho had not received tboropoifc till this morning, he had thought it advisable to call the meeting immediately, on account of Mr Curtis’s intention of going to Timaru. He thought it would be as well if Councillors would disabuse their minds of all previous reports. Mr Curtis's appointment was not made till July 24, so that no time was lost in laying the report before the meeting.

_ The I OWN Clerk thou read a very exhaustive report condemning the present works as utterly useless for lighting the City. On the matter of street-lighting he reported having examined the gas supplied to several lamps, and finding the average to bo 2.17 cubic feet instead of 4 cubic feet as contracted for. This would fully account for the defective lighting, and he stated that Dunedin the most wretchedly lighted town ho ever saw. In conclusion, Mr Curtis discountenanced the purchasing of the Gasworks, and suggested the building of new works, on Corporation property in St. Andrew_ street, at a cost of 1.34,493. If carbonic acid was dons away with in tha making of the gas, the quality of the gas would be much unproved.

i. n 6 Bo^u tions passed at the late meeting u rf Ben ?l )erance Hall having been .received, the Council resolved itself into committee.
